ALLIED Team

On 11-13 April 2023, ALLIED – the Alliance for Land, Indigenous, and Environmental Defenders – brought together ALLIED members; donors; indigenous, environmental and land defenders (ILEDs); and regional and international organisations working to support ILEDs in Bogotá, Colombia, with the overarching objective of identifying pathways and strategies for increased protection for these defenders and ways to accelerate change in the situation they are currently facing.

The three-part meeting focused on: 1) evaluation of ALLIED’s strategy, and discussion regarding opportunities for enhanced impact; 2) discussion and analysis of existing support strategies and work developed by organisations present at the gathering, in addition to identification of opportunities for increased protection; and 3) the formulation of recommendations to ALLIED and other key stakeholders on how to increase support and protection for ILEDs.

This report summarises the discussions held during the Bogota meeting. It first summarises the discussions held during the Bogotá meeting regarding ALLIED: the alliance’s mission and strategy, what it
is doing well, and how it could better fulfil its purpose (Part I – ALLIED: Improving recognition, respect, and support for the work of ILEDs) and then outlines discussions on existing protection strategies: what is working well and what could be done better (Part II – BUILDING TOGETHER: Actionable steps for increased protection).

Note: the Universal Rights Group is the International Secretariat of ALLIED.
