The links between climate change and human rights are more widely accepted than ever before. The Human Rights Council has adopted a series of resolutions calling attention to the effects of climate change on the full enjoyment of human rights, including the recognition of the right to a healthy environment in 2021. While climate change impacts have implications for the human rights of individuals in all parts of the world, the rights of those in already vulnerable situations are at particular risk.
Over the past 8 years, the international community has taken a number of steps to leverage human rights law and principles to strengthen international responses to climate change. Issues like funding loss and damage from climate change are now at the forefront of the human rights and climate agenda. URG’s work related in this area has explored human rights-based approaches to the impacts of climate change, including forced displacement, loss and damage, peace and security.
