Over the last few years, URG has worked with States determined to push for the universal recognition of the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment (R2E). After the recognition of R2E by both the Human Rights Council (2021) and the General Assembly (2022), URG continues to help make the case of the real-world practical value of R2E –both in terms of better protecting and promoting individual human rights, and in terms of protecting and conserving the natural environment. URG brings together governments, UN officials, independent experts, environmental human rights defenders, and civil society, to consider the scope and content of R2E, what it means for States at international and national levels, the leading role of the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly, and how R2E can be claimed by rights-holders around the world.
At the same time, URG continues its work to support and raise awareness about the vital work of Environmental Human Rights Defenders (EHRDs), and to better protect them from risk.
