URG Official Launch Event
The URG held its official launch in Geneva on 20 January 2014 in the presence of over one hundred and twenty human rights policy-makers, including around fifty Permanent Representatives and ambassadors, senior UN officials from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the International Labour Organization, the International Organization for Migration, the World Trade Organization and the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees, as well as representatives from other international organisations, state experts at the Human Rights Council, NGO leaders, academics and members of the press.
The event was marked by the presence of H.E. Mr. Baudelaire NDONG ELLA, President of the Human Rights Council, and the two former Presidents of the Human Rights Council, namely, H.E Mr. Remigiusz Achilles Henczel, Permanent Representative of Poland, and H. E. Ms. Laura Dupuy Lasserre, Permanent Representative of Uruguay.
Brief interventions were made by Dr Ahmed Shaheed (Chairman of the URG Board), H.E. Mr Baudelaire Ndong Ella (President of the Human Rights Council), Mr. Craig Mokhiber (Chief of the Development and Economic and Social Issues Branch at OHCHR) and Sir Nigel Rodley (Chairperson of the Human Rights Committee and URG Board member).
The event also marked the launch of The Routledge Handbook of International Human Rights Law, edited by Professor Sir Nigel Rodley (URG Board) and Scott Sheeran (URG Advisory Committee), and following the reception, a Panel chaired by Dr Ahmed Shaheed discussed “The Evolution of International Human Rights: Where have we been, where are we going?” Panelists included Professor Sir Nigel Rodley, Dr, Allehone Mulugeta Abebe, Professor Andrew Clapham, Mervat Rishmawi and Scott Sheeran.
