Building capacities to help environmental human rights defenders in the Asia-Pacific region find and access support
The Universal Rights Group in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment – David Boyd, and with the support of the Permanent Mission of Denmark in Geneva are organising a virtual workshop, which will focus on ‘Building capacities to help environmental human rights defenders in the Asia-Pacific region find and access support.
The objective of the workshop is to inform environmental human rights defenders (EHRDs) about the different support mechanisms available in their region, and the ways in which these can be accessed. Particular attention will also be paid to support for women and indigenous EHRDs.
The overarching objective is to increase support for and protection of environmental human rights defenders. The specific topics to be covered in the workshop, are:
1. The international human rights system: standards and mechanisms;
2. Regional mechanisms for the protection of EHRDs;
3. Tools and support systems available for EHRDs and how to access them, with a particular focus on networks, digital security, collective protection and reporting of human rights abuses and violations.
The event will take place over the course of two days on Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 December 2021 via Zoom.
