UNICEF and URG worked together to track the implementation of key clusters of UN human rights recommendations (generated by the Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures, and UPR) relevant to children’s rights. Through six case studies, UNICEF and URG showed, beyond question (based on anecdotal and empirical evidence), that the UN human rights compliance mechanisms, complemented by the wider UN system, have had and continue to have a clear and measurable impact on the domestic enjoyment of human rights (in this case, children’s rights).
The report contributed to contemporary international efforts, led by the former High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, to gather and publicise case studies or ‘human rights success stories,’ as part of a wider strategy (strongly supported by the Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres) to build a ‘positive narrative’ around human rights, the UN human rights pillar, and the contribution of human rights to sustainable development and to international peace and security.
