Paid internship - Nairobi, Kenya
The Universal Rights Group (URG) is looking for a dynamic individual with a passion for human rights, international relations, policy research and analysis, to fill an internship position based in Nairobi.
Objectives:
The internship aims to provide recent graduates from degree-level university courses (ideally at the Masters-level) with a first professional experience in international human rights policy. The internship will give the successful applicant a comprehensive grounding in the work of the UN Human Rights Council and its mechanisms, the wider UN human rights ‘pillar’ and the regional human rights systems as well as in the implementation of universal human rights norms at the national level.
About URG:
The URG is a policy think tank focused on the international human rights system and its impact on the ground. The URG has its main office in Geneva, Switzerland, and also has offices in Bogotá and New York. Establishment of the URG Nairobi office is underway.
Qualifications and Competences:
-Applicants should have completed a relevant degree (e.g., in human rights, international relations, international diplomacy and other relevant courses). The completion of a Masters- level degree in the relevant fields is an added advantage.
-Students who are currently pursuing a Master-level degree may also apply, if they have the possibility of undertaking an internship as part of their degree.
-Applicants should have strong research and drafting skills; keen interest in and knowledge of human rights including the UN human rights institutions; and good organizational abilities.
Roles and Responsibilities:
The intern will support the work of URG Analysts and Researchers to implement the projects set down by the URG Board of Trustees in the two-year Global Strategic Plan. Those projects cover a range of institutional and thematic issues, including inter alia: the overall UN human rights system, the right to a healthy environment, the protection of environmental defenders, accountability, and the implementation of universal human rights norms through national implementation and reporting mechanisms.
Daily responsibilities may vary depending on the project, but generally include:
-Conducting desk research, either online or in-person in Nairobi;
-Event organisation;
-Assistance with communications, URG website maintenance and content updates, office administration;
-Writing articles and blogs on UN human rights developments;
-Attending UN meetings and preparing reports.
Location:
Nairobi with possibility of remote work.
Duration:
Initial period of three months with the possibility of renewal upon completion of the internship.
